PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio –It's a busy week for the Bobcats, with men's basketball back on the road at the Myrtle Beach Invitational and football headed to The Glass Bowl to take on Toledo in a pivotal Midweek MACtion battle. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

FOOTBALL

The Ohio football team (7-3, 5-1 MAC) is set to continue midweek MACtion when they hit the road to take on the Toledo Rockets (7-3, 4-2 MAC) on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN2 with Clay Matvick and Steve Addazio on the call.

Ohio  took down Eastern Michigan 35-10 Wednesday evening (Nov. 13) at Frank Solich Field at Peden Stadium. Graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro had a career night, tying the school record for most rushing touchdowns in a game (4), marking the fourth quarterback in program history to hit this benchmark. Additionally, Navarro set a personal record for single-game passing yards (277) and was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance. 
  
The Rockets are currently 5-4 overall and 2-3 against MAC opponents. On Nov. 12, they took down Central Michigan, 37-10. Toledo sustained two conference losses in October, falling to Buffalo (Oct. 12) and Bowling Green (41-26). As a team, Toledo averages 29.90 points per game on 122.9 rushing yards and 294.20 passing yards. Their opponents average 21.10 points per game. Junior quarterback Tucker Gleason is 167-for-274 on 2,032 yards over nine games, throwing 19 passing touchdowns and seven interceptions. Gleason isn't afraid to use his legs, recording 69 carries and six rushing touchdowns so far this season.

The Ohio men's basketball team (1-3) head to the 2024 Myrtle Beach Invitational Nov. 21-24 at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C. The Bobcats open the invitational on Thursday, Nov. 21 when they take on Middle Tennesee (3-1). Tip-off is set for Noon ET and can be see non ESPNU. The Bobcats will return to action on Friday, Nov. 22 to take on either Portland or USF at either 11:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. The event concludes on Sunday, Nov. 24 with a time nad opponent TBA. 

Ohio is coming off an 0-1 week, falling to Illinois State and Memphis. Redshirt sophomore guard AJ Brown led the Bobcats on the week, averaging 19.5 points, while shooting .440 from the field, .429 from three and was 11-of-11 from the line. Junior guard Ajay Sheldon averaged 13.0 points, shooting .533 from three. On Nov. 15 at Memphis, Sheldon set a news career-high, scoring 20 points and hitting six three-pointers. 

Middle Tennessee is 3-1 overall with wins Abilene Christian and Evansville and is coming off a loss to Murray State on Saturday. Ohio and the Blue Raiders met last season in the Baha Mar Nassau Hoops Classic, with Ohio winning, 80-68. Ohio last competed in the Myrtle Beach Invitational since 2019 in head coach Jeff Boals' first season. 


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio women's basketball team (1-2) is back in action twice this week, starting on Wednesday, Nov. 20 when the Bobcats take on No. 12/12 Ohio State (3-0). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. since the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio finally hits the read on Sunday, Nov. 24 when they take on Wright State (1-3). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside the Wright State University Nutter Center and can be seen on ESPN+. 

The Bobcats are coming off their first victory of the season in Saturday (Nov. 16), defeating George Washington, 52-40, inside the Convo. Individually, the Bobcats were led by senior Kate Dennis who had a career-high 15 points; finishing five-for-eight from the field, two-for-five from the arc and three-for-three from the line. Sophomore Bailey Tabeling also contributed 12 points, a career-high nine rebounds and three steals. 

Ohio State is currently ranked No. 12 in the country and is entering the matchup with a 3-0 record after defeating Belmont on Sunday. Wright State is currently 1-3 overall after defeating Tennessee State on Friday and will take on Bellarmine on Thursday. 

SWIM AND DIVE
Nov. 22-24 / at TYR '85 Invite / Lynchburg, Va. / Liberty Natatorium / Prelims: 10 a.m. ET / Finals: 6 p.m. ET

The Ohio swimming and diving team is back in action for their final full team event before winter break on Nov. 22-24 at the 2024 TYR' 85 Invite hosted by Liberty at the Liberty Natatorium in Lynchburg, Va. The events will begin at 10 a.m. each day. 

Ohio is coming off a loss at Miami on Nov. 9. However, sophomore Zita Szoke was named the MAC Swimmer of the Week for her performance during the dual. Szoke three individual victories and one relay win. Szoke opened her day in the 200-yard freestyle, winning at 1:49.77. Then, in the 50 free, Szoke finished first with a time of 23.13 before returning for the 100-yard freestyle, picking up the win with a time of 50.02. She wrapped up her day in the 400-yard free relay, where the Bobcats won at 3:26.34.

Ohio competed in last year's TYR '85 Invite, finishing in third place with 2,251 points, while setting a number of school records in the process. 

WRESTLING
Nov. 23 / at Navy Classic / Annapolis, Md. / Wesley A. Brown Field House / 9 a.m.  

The Ohio wrestling team (1-1) returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 23 when they head to Annapolis, Md. for the 2024 Navy Classic inside Wesley A. Brown Field House. The event is set to begin at 9 a.m. 

Ohio is coming off a close 22-18 loss against Michigan State on Sunday in Athens. Redshirt sophomore Logan Cravatas was the first to score points for Ohio, ending with 2:07 minutes of riding time. Cravatas and redshirt junior Garrett Thompson both scored multiple takedowns during their matches in 149 and 174 respectively. 
 
Redshirt junior Peyten Kellar dominated Michigan state in 157 pounds with two takedowns and a near fall. He finished the third period with 2:42 minutes of riding time. With this, he earned the shutout with the individual score, 13-0.
