PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

Athens, Ohio –With a week to go before the new semester begins, MAC play ramps up for men's and women's basketball, while the indoor track and field season kicks off for the Bobcats. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio men's basketball team (7-7, 1-1 MAC) hits the road for more MAC play this week. The Bobcats' week begins on Tuesday, Jan. 9 with Ohio heading to Bowling Green for a matchup with the Falcons (10-4, 1-1 MAC). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Stroh Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio remains on the road on Saturday, Jan. 13 when Ohio heads to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan (5-9, 2-0 MAC). Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 1-1 week that saw the Bobcats defeat Northern Illinois, 78-66, Saturday afternoon. Junior forward AJ Clayton (Rosevile, Ohio) tied a career high with 23 points in the victory, with Clayton scoring 19 of them in the second half to help lead Ohio to victory.

The Ohio women's basketball team (4-9, 1-1 MAC) is back in action for more MAC play this week starting on Wednesday, Jan. 10 when the Bobcats host Northern Illinois (7-6, 1-1 MAC) inside the Convocation Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio is back on the road on Saturday, Jan. 13 when the Bobcats head to Toledo, Ohio for a matchup with the Rockets (9-3, 2-0 MAC). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside Savage Arena and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 1-1 week to start MAC play, defeating Akron, 65-58, inside the Convo on Jan. 3 to open MAC play. 

DIVING 
Jan. 12-14 / at Buffalo Diving Invite / Buffalo, N.Y. / Alumni Arena Natatorium / All Day

The Ohio divers are back in action this weekend when they head to Buffalo, N.Y. for the 2024 Buffalo Diving Invite, Jan. 12-14. All three days will take place at the Alumni Arena Natatorium.

The Ohio divers are coming off a strong meet against Marshall. In 3m dive, freshman Astrid Pichardo (Guanajuato, Mexico) placed second with a score of 264.53, while classmate Savanna Bos (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished fourth with a score of 226.95. In the 1m event, Pichardo placed second with a score of 243.75, while Bos placed third (217.73). 
 
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Jan. 12 / at Falcon Early Bird Open / Bowling Green, Ohio / Perry Field House / Field Event 4 p.m. / Track Events: 5 p.m. / Live Results / Meet Information 

The Ohio track and field teams opens the 2024 indoor season on Friday, Jan. 12 for the 2024 Falcon Early Bird Open hosted by Bowling Green. The one-day event will take place inside Perry Field House on the campus of Bowling Green. Field events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., with track events set to start at 5 p.m.

WRESTLING

Ohio wrestling (4-2) is back in action on Friday, Jan. 12 when they head to DeKalb, Ill. for a MAC battle with Northern Illinois (7-2). The meet is set to begin at 8 p.m. EST inside Victor E. Court and can be seen on ESPN+. 

The Bobcats are coming off a meet against Michigan State last week that saw three Bobcats earn wins. Sophomore Mason Brugh (Wadsworth, Ohio) picked up his second dual-meet victory of the season, defeating the Spartans' Andy Hampton by sudden victory in the 133-pound class. At 149, sophomore Derek Raike (Point Pleasant, W. Va.) knocked off Braden Stauffenberg by an 11-3 major decision. The win helped Raike improve to a 14-7 record on the season. In the 174-pound weight class, junior Sal Perrine (Nordonia, Ohio) improved to a 3-2 dual-meet record and 12-8 overall record with a major decision over Marty Larkin.
