ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio swimming and diving team returned to action for its final dual meet of the fall semester Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4), defeating Mid-American Conference foe Akron, 173-126 inside the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
Ohio opened the event with the 200-yard medley relay, where the Bobcats' 'A' team of sophomore
Allison Schrank (Blaine, Minn.), sophomore
Casadie DiBetta (St. Clairsville, Ohio), senior
Gabrielle Brust (Granville, Ohio) and graduate student
McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio) placed second with a time of 1:43.36.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, junior
Gabrielle McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa.) placed first with a time of 10:20.22, while senior
Morgan Croaning (Carmel, Ind.) finished second with a time of 10:25.45.
In the 200-yard freestyle, the Bobcats took the top-two spots, with freshman
Zita Szoke (Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary) finishing first in 1:51.00, while sophomore
Anna McGrath (Lewis Center, Ohio) finished second in 1:53.63. Grau picked up a fourth-place finish, touching in with a time of 1:54.34.
The 100-yard backstroke saw Schrank finish second in 58.35, while senior
Riley Bunstine (Alexandria, Ohio) finished third (58.66) and freshman
Melanie Schweikert (Maineville, Ohio) in fourth with a time of 59.07.
DiBetta continued her hot start to the season, earning the victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing the race in 1:02.65. Junior
Julia Strine (Shippensburg, Pa.) finished second (1:03.76), while sophomore
Emily Ellsworth (Westerville, Ohio) placed third with a time of 1:04.33.
In the 200 fly, Brust placed second with a time of 2:03.96, while senior
Peyton Farrell (Beavercreek, Ohio) placed third in the time of 2:06.84.
Grau picked up a victory in the 50 free, finishing the race in 23.85, while senior
Caroline Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa.) finished second in 24.06, while senior
Meg Voigt (Bryan, Ohio) finished third (24.29).
In the 100 free, Szoke finished first, touching in with a time of 51.57, while Dunigan placed fourth in 52.69 and Voigt in fifth with a time of 52.91. Brunstine earned a second-place finish in the 200 back, touching the wall in 2:04.28, while Schweikert finished third in 2:04.48.
The Bobcats took the top-three spots in the 200-yard breaststroke. Ellsworth earned the victory with a time of 2:16.91, while DiBetta placed second (2:17.46) and Strine third (2:19.13).
McKee earned a victory in the 500 free with a time of 5:00,61, while McGrath placed third with a time of 5:03.20. Brust placed second in the 100 fly, finishing the race in 55.14, while Szoke finished third with a time of 56.68.
In the 400 IM, Ellsworth placed second with a time of 4:25.42, while McKee finished fourth (4:28.89) and Croaning in fifth with a time of 4:35.02.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Ohio 'A' team of Szoke, Voigt, Dunigan and Grau placed first with a time of 1:33.71.
In diving, freshman
Astrid Pichardo (Guanajuato, Mexico) placed third in the 3m event, finishing with a score of 170.68, while freshman
Savanna Bos (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished fifth with a score of 250.13. In the 1m event, Pichardo earned the victory with a score of 271.43, while junior
Sophie Cooper (Milford, Ohio) finished fifth with a score of 215.78,
Up next, the Bobcats have a week off from competition before returning to action Nov. 16-19. The Ohio swimmers will head to Lynchburg, Va. Nov. 17-19 for the 2023 TYR '85 Invite hosted by Liberty, while the divers head to Columbus, Ohio Nov. 16-18 for the Ohio State Invite.
