ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio swimming and diving team opened the 2023-24 season this weekend (Oct. 13-14), defeating Illinois State, 216-82 inside the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
The Bobcats opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard IM relay, with the Ohio 'A' team of sophomore
Allison Schrank (Blaine, Minn.), sophomore
Casadie DiBetta (St. Clairsville, Ohio), senior
Gabrielle Brust (Granville), and graduate student
McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio) placing first with a time of 1:44.11
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, senior
Morgan Croaning (Carmel, Ind.) finished first in 10:24.14, followed by freshman
Ashley Sallows (Delaware, Ohio) in second (10:32.82) and senior
Olivia Morlok (Columbus, Ind.) in third (10:37.96).
The 200-yard free saw the Bobcats go one-two-three with freshman
Zita Szoke (Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary) finish first with a time of 1:52.03. Grau finished second (1:53.29), while sophomore
Anna McGrath (Lewis Center, Ohio) placed third with a time of 1:53.38. Sophomore
Peyton Binns (Hudson, Ohio) finished fifth, touching in with a time of 1:56.29).
Brust picked up a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 56.35. Sophomore
Morgan Brown (Roanoke, Ind.) finished third in 58.51, while Schrank (58.77) and senior
Riley Bunstine (Alexandria, Ohio) (58.13) finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The 100-yard breaststroke saw DiBetta finish first with a time of 1:03.23, followed by sophomore
Emily Ellsworth (Westerville, Ohio) in second, touching in with a personal best at 1:03.86. Junior
Julia Strine (Shippensburg, Pa.) placed fourth in 1:04.64, while junior
Edie Sawyer (Cranberry Township, Pa.) finished fifth in 1:05.78.
Junior
Gabrielle McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa.) finished first in the 200-yard fly in 2:02.26 and a personal best, while senior
Peyton Farrell (Beavercreek, Ohio) finished second with a time of 2:05.38. Szoke earned another first-place finish in the 50 free, touching in at 23.95, followed by senior
Meg Voigt (Bryan, Ohio) in second (23.96) and senior
Caroline Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa.) in third in 23.97.
In the 3m dive, freshman
Savanna Bos (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished second with a score of 242.85, followed by junior
Grace Matocha (Magnolia, Texas) in fourth with a score of 227.03.
In the 100 free, Grau placed first with a time of 52.41, followed by Voigt in second with a time of 52.57 and Dunigan in fourth (53.10). Bunstine picked up a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing the race in 2:05.01, while freshman
Melanie Schweikert (Maineville, Ohio) finished third with a time of 2:05.47.
Ellsworth picked up her second win of the day in the 200 breast, finishing with a. time of 2:18.11, DiBetta (2:18.32) placed second, followed by Sawyer (2:23.58) in third and Strine (2:23.63) in fourth.
In the 500-yard freestyle event, McKee picked up another first-place finish with a time of 4:58.39, followed by Croaning in second (5:07.28) and McGrath in third (5:08.47). Brust picked up the win in the 100-yard fly, touching in with a time of 56.27, while Farrell finished third in 57.96.
In the 200-yard IM, Brust finished first with a time of 2:05.90, followed by Ellsworth (2:08.05) in second and junior
Raphaelle Anglade (Toulouse, France) in third with a time of 2:11.42. Meanwhile, Strine placed fourth with a time of 2:15.19.
In the final event of the night, the Ohio 400-yard free relay 'A' team of Szoke, Voigt, Dunigan and Grau placed first with a time of 3:28.46.
Both teams concluded the meet on Saturday (Oct. 14). morning with 1m dive. For the Bobcats, freshman
Astrid Pichardo (Guanajuato, Mexico) placed second with a score of 261.38, while junior
Sophie Cooper (Milford, Ohio) finished fourth (225.15) and Bos in fifth (216.83).
The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Oct. 20 when they head to Baltimore, Md. to take on UMBC. Meet time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
