ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio swimming and diving team returned to action on Saturday morning (Oct. 29), defeating Miami, 177.5-122.5, at the Ohio University Aquatic Center. The victory over the RedHawks is the first dual meet victory against Miami since Feb. 5, 2011.
"It's a good feeling to beat Miami at home after 11 years," head coach
Mason Norman said. "This is something special our team won't forget for a long time. We had this date on our calendar for quite a while. Our team is special and its nice for them to have this experience, especially our seniors."
The event opened with the 200-yard medley relay, where the Bobcats 'A' team of freshman
Allison Schrank (Blaine, Minn.), freshman
Annmaria Hornyak (Debrecen, Hungary), junior
Gabrielle Brust (Granville, Ohio) and junior
Caroline Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa.) finished in first with a time of 1':42.16.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle event, the Bobcats took the top three spots, with freshman
Lauren Hartel (Arlington, Va.) finishing first with a time of 10:11.62, while junior
Morgan Croaning (Carmel, Ind.) placed second in 10:22.10 and sophomore
Gabrielle McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa.) finished third with a time of 10:24.96.
In the 200 free event, freshman
Anna McGrath (Magnolia, Texas) finished in second place with a time of 1:52.71, followed by senior
Emma Fortman (Madeira, Ohio) in 1:53.24 and
McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio) in 1:53.32.
The Bobcats once again took the top three spots in the 100 back, with Schrank picking up the victory in 55.62. Junior
Riley Bunstine (Alexandria, Ohio) placed second in 57.54, while freshman
Morgan Brown (Roanoke, Ind.) finished third in 57.98.
The 100-yard breaststroke saw Hornyak pick up with win with a time of 1:03.18, followed by sophomore
Julia Strine (Shippensburg, Pa.) who finished second with an overall time of 1:04.36.
In the 200-yard fly, Brust picked up the second-place finish with a time of 2:01.32, while senior
Madeline Marks (Bentonville, Ark.) placed fourth with a finishing time of 2:04.31. Meanwhile, in the 50 free, Dunigan earned a first-place finish with a time of 23.78, while Grau placed third in 24.04.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Dunigan picked up a first-place finish with a time of 51.25, while Grau placed fourth with a time of 52.15. In the 200-yard backstroke, the Bobcats took first and second place, with Bunstine placing first in 2:03.50 and Schrank finishing second in 2:03.77.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, the Bobcats once again took the top-three spots, with Hornyak finishing first with a time of 2:17.19. Freshman
Emily Ellsworth finished second in 2:17.40, while freshman Casadie DiBetta (St. Clairsville, Ohio) finished third with a time of 2:20.27. Strine also added a strong finishing time, touching in at 2:20.60 and a fourth-place finish.
In diving, senior
Halli Siwik (Fishers, Ind.) finished second with a score of 268.28, while senior
Sienna Breton (Cheshire, Conn.) finished fourth with a score of 247.13. Meanwhile, in the 3-meter event, Brenton placed fourth with a score of 236.03, while Siwik finished sixth with a score of 226.58.
In the 500-free, the Bobcats earned two top-three finishes, with Hartel finishing second in 5:00.89 and McKee finishing third in 5:02.83.
Brust picked up a win in the 100-yard fly, touching in with a time of 55.27. Meanwhile, junior
Peyton Farrell (Beavercreek, Ohio) finished third with a time of 57.47.
In the 200-yard IM, the Bobcats continued to dominate, taking the top-four spots with Ellsworth finishing first in 2:05.13. Brust finished second with a time of 2:06.46, followed by Hornyak in third with a time of 2:08.20. Freshman
Alexandra Wayner picked up a fourth place finish a time of 2:09.01.
In the final event of the afternoon, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Ohio 'A' team of Grau, Fortman, Dunigan and Hartel placed second with a time of 3:27.92.
Up next, the Bobcats head to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Friday, Nov. 4 for a tri-meet with Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Meet time is set to start at 3 p.m.
