ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio men's basketball team (2-0) piled up 15 three-pointers and four players finished in double figures to pave the way to a 96-75 victory over Sam Houston State (1-1) on Monday (Nov. 14) at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
The Bobcats' 15 treys tied for the fifth-most in a game in program history. Ohio shot 52.5 percent (31-of-59) from the field -- including 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from beyond the arc -- while limiting the Bearkats to just 38.8 percent (26-of-67) -- including 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from three-point range.
Senior forward Antonio Campbell (Cincinnati, Ohio), redshirt senior forward Kenny Kaminski (Medina, Ohio), sophomore guard Jordan Dartis (Newark, Ohio) and sophomore guard Gavin Block (Lincoln, Ill.) combined for 65 of Ohio's 96 points.
Campbell led all scorers with a season-high 20 points -- shooting 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field. He also hauled in a season-high nine rebounds to lead the team, blocked two shots and dished out an assist in 24 minutes.
Kaminski dropped a season-high 17 points, going 6-of-8 from the field -- including a perfect five-of-five from three. He has knocked down at least five treys in a game eight times during his Ohio career.
"I had a talk with him, and I'm gonna take all credit for his shooting performance so far," said third-year head coach Saul Phillips. "He was like one of those 3-D pictures at the mall where if you stare at it long enough you see something come out of it. He was staring so hard at it that he couldn't see the picture, and he was pressing. He came up to me before our opener, and he said, 'My shot feels really good tonight.' I said, 'Why don't you let a few fly?' And, he did. I think that gave him a lot of confidence going into this game."
Dartis added a season-high 17 points, with four of his five made field goals coming from beyond the arc. He also dished out three assists and collected two steals.
Block knocked down three treys to match his career best en route to finishing with a season-high 11 points. He also added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Redshirt junior guard Jaaron Simmons (Dayton, Ohio) distributed a season-high nine assists to go along with six points.
"From my perspective, when I see all of my guys hitting like that, I just continue to run different ball screen sets and make the defense think a lot because it's gonna be hard to guard the roll, Tony and stop all of my shooters on the outside," said Simmons.
Freshman forward Jason Carter (Johnstown, Ohio) tallied a career-high six points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes off of the bench. Sophomore forward Doug Taylor (Columbus, Ohio) contributed a career-high eight points in 13 minutes thanks in large part to converting six of his eight free throw attempts. He also notched two blocks.
The Bobcats never trailed and led by as many as 28 with just under seven minutes to play.
"Coach has been preaching since he got here, when we are beating a team we are supposed to beat or we are just winning, period, keep piling it on; don't stop," said Campbell.
Senior guard Dakarai Henderson led Sam Houston State with 18 points. Senior forward Torry Butler posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 boards in 21 minutes off of the bench. Senior forward/center Aurimas Majauskas totaled 10 points for the Bearkats.
Ohio plays its first game away from Athens in 2016-17 as it visits Georgia Tech (2-0) on Friday (Nov. 18) at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. The opening tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. The contest will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
