ATHENS, Ohio-Marshall's DeAndre Kane tallied 18 points, while Tirrell Baines recorded his eighth career double-double to lead the Thundering Herd over Ohio 65-57 Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in Athens.
Marshall improved to 5-2 with the win, while Ohio dropped to 4-3.
Ware's 18 came on 5-9 shooting from the floor and 7-for-12 at the line. He also had a team-best four assists. Baines went for 12 points and 10 boards and Shaquille Johnson added three steals.
Ohio's D.J. Cooper led the team with 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Asown Sayles chipped in three assists as well.
The two teams fought their way through a first half that saw the squads combine for 25 turnovers, while both also struggled from the field (Marshall-36 percent, Ohio-33). Ohio raced out to a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest on a layup by Ivo Baltic and consecutive baskets by Cooper. However, the Herd responded with a 10-3 run over the next four minutes, one second to take a 10-8 lead on a dunk by Orlando Allen at the 14:17 mark. The rest of the half was a defensive grind, with Marshall taking a 27-23 advantage into halftime.
The Herd came out strong at the beginning of the second half when it took a 10-point lead on a Kane free throw at the 15:50 mark. Ohio gradually sliced the margin back down and tied the affair at 43-all when Baltic completed a three-point play with 9:53 left. However, Marshall took the lead once again and held it until Cooper drained a 3-pointer from the corner to tie the contest at 55-all with 3:35 left. The Herd, though, slowly pulled away down the stretch when it converted on 10 of its last 12 free throws from that point on.
Marshall outrebounded Ohio 41-30, which included a 23-14 margin in the second half. Both teams had trouble controlling the ball as the game saw a combined 39 turnovers (Marshall 21, Ohio 18).
For the game, the Herd made 44.7 percent of its looks (21-47), while Ohio was held to a 33.3 percent clip (20-60).
