ATHENS, Ohio -- Ken Winstead has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development, as announced by Ohio Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Jim Schaus today.
"Ken Winstead is the perfect hire for our top fundraising position, as we are promoting from within in our current Ohio Bobcat Club staff," said Schaus. "Ken has spent his career in athletic fundraising and successfully ran fundraising athletic operations at schools like the University of Washington and the University of Oregon, which is where I first met him many years ago."
Winstead, who received his bachelor's and master's degree from Ohio in 1980 and '81, respectively, has served as Assistant Athletic Director for Development at his alma mater since July of 2018.
"As a Bobcat, I am thrilled to be in a position to give back to this amazing institution," said Winstead. "The Ohio Bobcat Club staff and advisory board are looking forward to helping our outstanding coaches continue building championship teams, enhancing the student-athlete experience and building on the incredible value Bobcat Athletics brings to Ohio University."
Prior to his return to Athens last year, Winstead spent over 30 years serving in development roles at Georgia Southern, Oregon, Houston, Washington, Colorado State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Seattle as well as with USA Wrestling.
"Ken is back home in that he's a Springfield Ohio, native, two-time Ohio University alumnus and has ties to athletics having served as a manager of Bill Hess' football teams," said Schaus. "He knows so many alums who know him everywhere we go. What is special about Ken is his high energy, passion for people, friendly attitude and love for Ohio University. Everybody likes him. I am excited about the experience and history of success he will bring to this important role for Ohio Athletics."
In Winstead's new role he will also serve as the department's liaison with University Advancement and The Ohio University Foundation.
"Ken is a great colleague with a lot of experience and we are looking forward to him serving in the Senior Director of Development, Athletics/Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development role for University Advancement and Intercollegiate Athletics," said Ohio University Director of Advancement Administration & Special Projects Hannah Bechtold.
Winstead's vision for the Ohio Bobcat Club staff and advisory board includes increasing giving to build championship teams, to develop student-athletes individually as a person, student and athlete and to build on the value athletics brings to Ohio University.
Winstead has set an aggressive goal for the calendar year of 2019 to increase Ohio Bobcat Club gift totals by 30 percent, achieving this goal through an increased number of annual gifts by Ohio University alumni and friends as well as former student-athletes.
"I encourage Bobcat alumni, fans and former student-athletes who are presently not giving to athletics to join the Ohio Bobcat Club and enjoy being part of building what will become the premier athletic program in the Mid-American Conference and position the Bobcats for success on a national scale," said Winstead.
Winstead has two children, Alex and Sydney.
