CLEVELAND – Redshirt sophomore Arsen Ashughyan (Vanadzor, Armenia) and redshirt freshman Kade Kowalski (Nashport, Ohio) represented the Ohio wrestling team by earning spots on the 2017 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday (March 29).
A total of 34 student-athletes were named to the team.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
This is the first Academic All-MAC honor for each Ashughyan and Kowalski.
An International Business major with a 3.499 GPA, Ashughyan accumulated a 16-13 record during his first full-season as a starter at 174-pounds. The redshirt sophomore took sixth place at the 2016 Navy Classic and earned a fall victory over Central Michigan’s Jordan Atienza at the prestigious Midlands Championships.
A Marketing major with a 3.816 GPA, Kowalski won five matches in his first season as a starter, all by decision, including conference triumphs over Kent State’s Tim Rooney (3-2) and Missouri’s Alex Butler (8-1). Kowalski wrestled at 157- and 149-pounds this season.
