CLEVELAND -- The Mid-American Conference wrestling coaches announced the January weight class individual rankings and team rankings in conjunction with the league office today.
Based on the individual rankings, the Ohio wrestling team now boasts eight student-athletes ranked in the top-four of their respective weight classes in the league, which is up one from the December rankings.
As a team, the Bobcats continue to be ranked second in the MAC with 20 points. The eight schools were ranked based on the number of first through fourth-place votes that were earned in the individual voting system. A first-place vote was worth four team points; a second-place vote earned three team points; third-seeded votes were worth two team points, while a fourth-place tally earned one point in the team ranking system. The Bobcats are ranked behind Missouri (30 points).
Redshirt junior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) is still holding down the top spot at 125 pounds. Laney is 7-5 so far on the year with one win by fall and three by major decision.
Three Bobcats are ranked second in their respective weight classes -- redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) at 133, freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) at 149 and redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) at 157. Guillen is 5-1 on the year with one win by fall. Hagan, who was ranked first at 149 last month, is 11-8 on the season with three victories by major decision and two by fall. Carson is now 12-4 on the year and is coming off of a fourth-place finish at the 2019 Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear. He is currently ranked No. 19 in the country according to InterMat.
Sophomore Aaron Naples (Brunswick, Ohio), who has started the season 8-6 with three victories by fall, two more by major decision and another by technical fall, has maintained his No. 3 ranking at 197.
Three more Bobcats are ranked fourth in their respective weight classes -- senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) at 141, freshman Colt Yinger (Nelsonville, Ohio) at 165 and redshirt senior Zack Parker (Felton, Del.) at heavyweight. Kelly made his 2018-19 season debut at the 2019 Southern Scuffle, turning in a fourth-place finish after going 6-2 at the event and recording three pins. He is currently ranked No. 19 in the country according to The Open Mat. Yinger is off to a strong start in his rookie season, boasting a 10-3 record with one win by fall and four by major decision. Parker is 11-2 on the season with one victory by fall.
