Ohio Wrestling Visits No. 23 Iowa State

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team (1-1) is headed to Ames, Iowa, to battle No. 23-ranked Iowa State (1-1) on Sunday (Dec. 16). Action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT from Hilton Coliseum.

The Bobcats last competed on Nov. 30, topping host Appalachian State, 25-16, in Boone, N.C. Redshirt junior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) earned a 19-5 major decision win at 125 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) recorded a pin in 5:19 at 133. Redshirt freshman Kyran Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) gave Ohio two-straight pins, tallying a fall in 2:50 at 141. Redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) notched a 13-9 decision victory at 157. Ohio sealed its first dual meet victory of the year with wins at 174 and 184. Redshirt sophomore Joe Terry won by an 8-7 decision at 174 while junior Hunter Yeargan (Willard, Mo.) came away with a 3-1 sudden victory decision at 184.

On Thursday (Dec. 13), the Mid-American Conference wrestling coaches announced the December weight class individual rankings and team rankings. Based on the individual rankings, the Ohio wrestling team boasts seven student-athletes ranked in the top-four of their respective weight classes in the league, with redshirt junior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) ranked first at 125 pounds and freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) ranked first at 149 pounds. As a team, the Bobcats are now ranked second in the MAC.

Laney is 4-2 so far on the year, with one win coming by fall and two others coming by major decision. He moved up to the top spot in his weight class after coming in at No. 2 in the November rankings. Laney is ranked No. 15 in the country according to The Open Mat, No. 18 according to InterMat and No. 19 according to WIN Magazine.

Hagan sports an 8-5 record and owns one victory by fall and three major decision wins, vaulting him from a fourth-place ranking in November all the way up to first.

Ranked second in their respective weight classes for the second month in a row are Mario Guillen at 133 and Carson at 157. Guillen is 5-0 on the season -- including a 2-0 mark in dual meets -- while Carson is 5-2 with a 1-0 record in dual meets and one win coming by technical fall. Sophomore Aaron Naples (Brunswick, Ohio), who has started the season 7-4 with two victories by fall, two more by major decision and another by technical fall, moved up to the No. 3 spot at 197. Redshirt senior Zack Parker (Felton, Del.) is now ranked fourth at heavyweight. He sports a 10-1 mark so far this season. Senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) remains ranked fourth at 141.

Iowa State entered the NWCA/USA Today National Coaches' Poll at No. 23. The Cyclones boast six ranked wrestlers on their roster -- redshirt freshman Austin Gomez at 133, redshirt sophomore Ian Parker at 141, redshirt sophomore Jarrett Degen at 149, redshirt freshman Marcus Coleman at 174, redshirt sophomore Sam Colbray at 184 and redshirt senior Willie Miklus at 197. In its last dual meet on Dec. 1, Iowa State suffered a narrow 19-18 defeat at the hands of No. 3 Iowa. Ohio and Iowa State will be squaring off for the fourth time and first time since the 1998-99 campaign.

Ohio will host to its first home dual meet of the 2018-19 season next Thursday (Nov. 20) when it welcomes Chattanooga to the Convocation Center. The matchup is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. ET. It will be Ugly Sweater Night at the Convo, and fans will receive free Christmas ornaments.
