Ohio Women’s Basketball Drops Contest to Virginia

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Ohio women's basketball team wrapped up play at the 2017 West Palm Invitational on Sunday, falling to Virginia 71-59.

Amani Burke (Columbus, Ohio) led the Bobcats with 14 points, while Dominique Doseck (Athens, Ohio) added 11 points.  

HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Bobcats started the game off strong, with Kendall Jessing (Sylvania, Ohio) getting the first two points for the Bobcats. However, Virginia would hit a three, bit moments later Taylor Agler (Westerville, Ohio) would hit her own, giving Ohio the 5-3 lead.

After Virginia would tie the game at 10-10 with 6:40 left, Ohio went on a 12-3 run that started with a Doseck three-pointer. The run would give Ohio a nine-point lead with 2:08 left before Virginia would register a jumper to cut the Ohio lead to 22-15.

The Bobcats would add more, taking a 28-17 lead from a three from Gabby Burris (Baltimore, Ohio) with 40 seconds left. Virginia would get two more before time expired, but Ohio would wrap up the first quarter with a 28-19 lead.

Virginia would open the second quarter on a 6-0 run before Cierra Hooks (Dayton, Ohio) would hit a free throw with 8:27 left to hold the Bobcats lead to 29-25. However, Virginia would tie the game up moments later before Burris would hit two free throws to give Ohio the 31-29 lead with 3:47 left. Virginia would hit two three to take a four-point lead before Burke hit the Bobcats' only field goal of the quarter with 1:57 left to help go into halftime trailing 35-34.

Ohio opened the third quarter with a three from Burke to take a 37-35 lead, however Virginia would tie the game up moments later and then take the lead on a jumper with 8:36 left in the third. Ohio would be unable to tie the game up or retake the lead the remainder of the game. Virginia would go on a 21-2 run that would be broken up by a Burke layup, giving Virginia a 56-39 lead.

Olivia Bower (Bowerstown, Ohio) would hit a three with 56 seconds left in the quarter to send the game to the fourth with the Bobcats trailing 60-42.

The Bobcats would add 17 points to their score total in the fourth quarter, but the damage would be done, and the Bobcats would fall by the final of 71-59.  

OF NOTE
The Bobcats were 19-of-55 (.345) from the field, 12-of-39 (.308) from three-point range and 9-of-14 (.643) from the free throw line.

Burke was 5-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range, while Doseck was 4-of-12 from the field and 3-of-11 from three-point range.

Burris added nine points for Ohio, while Barker, Hooks and Bower all had six points each.

Ohio was outrebounded 51-22. The Bobcats also dished out 13 assists.

The Ohio defense forced Virginia to turn the ball over 20 times, with 14 of those coming from steals. The Bobcats were able to score 23 points off of turnovers.

Virginia went 30-of-62 (.484) from the field, 9-of-18 (.500) from three-point range and 8-of-12 (.667) from the free throw line.  

The Bobcats are now 0-1 all time against Virginia and 4-20 all time against the ACC.

After a few days off for the holiday break, the Ohio women's basketball team will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 28 when the Bobcats wrap up nonconference play against North Carolina A&T. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
