Ohio Softball Falls to Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Ohio softball team (7-6) returned to the diamond on Wednesday (Feb. 27) when they paid a visit to Huntington, W. Va. to take on Marshall (11-5) in some mid-week softball action, with the Bobcats falling by the final of 8-0 in five innings. 

Ohio would get on the bases first in the top of the first inning, when sophomore Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) would single with one out. However, the Bobcats would be unable to get her around, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with it still scoreless. 

Marshall would put five runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning in an RBI double and two RBI singles, putting the Herd up 5-0 after the first inning. 

The Bobcats would get a runner on in the top of the second when senior Deanna Cole (Akron, Ohio) drew a walk. However, the Bobcats would be unable to get her around. Marshall would come back in the bottom of the frame and add a run, taking a 6-0 lead after two. 

Ohio would threaten again in the top of the third, when with two outs, Yun would record her second hit of the day. She then moved to second when freshman Charlee Pond (Redondo Beach, Calif.) drew a walk, however once again, the Bobcats would leave the runners on base. Marshall would go on to add on one more run in the bottom of the frame, taking a 7-0 lead after three. 

Ohio's biggest threat would come in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Natalie Alvarez (Long Beach, Calif.) would single to left to lead off the inning. With one out, Cole would single to left, putting runners on first and second. Senior MacKenzie Brunswick (Bellefontaine, Ohio) would enter the game to pinch run for Alvarez and would move to third when senior Alex Day reached on an error. However, the Marshall defense would get the next two outs, and end the Ohio threat, sending the game to the bottom of the fourth with Ohio still trailing 7-0. 

Marshall would add on again in the bottom of the fourth off of a solo homerun, putting the Herd up 8-0 going into the fifth inning. The Bobcats would try to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning, when with one out, Pond drew a walk and then stole second. Senior Morgan Geno (Chillicothe, Ohio) would draw a walk of her own, putting runners on first and second. However, the Marshall defense would get the next batter to ground into a game-ending double play, with the Bobcats falling by the final of 8-0. 

Overall, Ohio was unable to score a run on four hits and did not commit an error, while Marshall scored eight runs on nine hits and had one error. 

Individually, Yun finished the day 2-for-3 with two singles, while Alvarez and Cole both recorded hits for Ohio as well. 

In the circle, sophomore Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) started the game, allowing five runs on two hits and walked one. Freshman Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out one. Junior Desirae Villanueva (Surrey, British Columbia) pitched 0.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits, walked one and struck out one. 

Up next, the Bobcats head to Durham, N.C. to compete in the Duke Invitational on Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3. On Friday, Ohio will play Charleston Southern at 10 a.m. ET and Mississippi State at 1 p.m. ET. Play will continue on Saturday when the Bobcats take on Campbell at 10 a.m. ET and Charleston Southern at 12:30 p.m. ET. The tournament will conclude on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET when Ohio faces off against host Duke.
