ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio softball senior infielder Mikayla Cooper was named the Mid-American Conference East Player of the Week for her performance the week of March 19, the league announced today.
Cooper (Delaware, Ohio) helped lead the Bobcats at the plate during the first weekend of MAC play. Cooper hit .444 with four hits, three homers, four runs scored, five RBI and a sacrifice fly to help Ohio sweep Central Michigan to open MAC play. She also had a 1.444 slugging percentage and a .455 on base percentage. She registered 13 total bases, drew one walk and did not record and error in the field while also registering 18 putouts.
In the first game of the weekend, Cooper led the bottom of the first off with her first home run of the weekend, a bomb over the left center wall, giving Ohio the early lead. Overall, Cooper went 1-for-2 with a run scored, two RBI and a sacrifice fly in the 4-3 victory. She returned in the second game of the double header and did what she did in the first game. With the Bobcats trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the first, Cooper led the inning off with a homerun right past the right field foul pole, tying the game. Overall, Cooper went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the 8-5 victory.
In the final game of the series, Cooper went 1-for-3 with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the 5-1 victory. She also scored two runs and had two RBI and drew a walk in the win.
It is the second time in her career that Cooper has earned the weekly honor.
