Ohio Men's Golf Visits Akron For Firestone Invitational

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio men's golf team makes the drive north to Akron, Ohio, to participate in The Firestone Invitational this week (Oct. 2-3) at Firestone Country Club's North Course.

The 54-hole event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET with 36 holes on Monday (Oct. 2). Final-round action will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday (Oct. 3). Live scoring will be available through GolfStat. Firestone Country Club's North Course plays at par 72 and 7,125 yards.

The Bobcats will battle Mid-American Conference rival and tournament host Akron in addition to Bradley, Cincinnati, Davidson, Dayton, Furman, George Mason, Illinois State, Mercer, Old Dominion, Richmond, South Carolina-Aiken, Temple, William & Mary and Valparaiso.

Ohio turned in a ninth-place finish at The Firestone Invitational in 2016 with a total team score of 874 (+10). The Bobcats opened the tournament with identical rounds of 290 (+2), then posted a final-round 294 (+6)

Cincinnati captured The Firestone Invitational title in 2016 with a total team score of 850 (-14). Cincinnati's Austin Squires earned medalist honors at The Firestone Invitational as a sophomore in 2016 with a 205 (-11), totaling rounds of 69 (-3), 68 (-4) and 68 (-4).

The Bobcats are coming off of a 13th-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate at Toledo's Inverness Club. Ohio combined to total a team score of 592 (+24) after rounds of 293 (+9) and 299 (+15) on Sept. 18. The final 18 holes of the tournament were scheduled to be played on Sept. 19, but play was cancelled due to heavy rain and lightning. Redshirt senior Tom Nettles (McMurray, Pa.) and senior Brady Bohl (Dublin, Ohio) tied for 54th place with matching scores of 148 (+6). Nettles shot rounds of 73 (+2) and 75 (+4) while Bohl compiled round scores of 76 (+5) and 72 (+1).

Nettles has paced the Bobcats at each of their first two tournaments to begin the 2017-18 campaign. He tied for 19th with a 143 (+1) at the 2017 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Sept. 11 in Huntington, W. Va. 

Ohio's penultimate tournament of the 2017 fall slate will take it to the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W. Va., next week (Oct. 9-10), where the Bobcats will compete in The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational.
