ATHENS, Ohio -- Redshirt senior left tackle Joe Lowery (Tallmadge, Ohio) of the Ohio football team has been the 2018 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year by Pro Football Focus.
Lowery, who is a health services administration major, was also named to the 2018 Pro Football Focus All-American Second Team Offense. He earned 2018 All-Mid-American Conference First Team honors after being an All-MAC Second Team pick in '17.
According to Pro Football Focus, Lowery was third-highest graded offensive tackle across the entire nation. He allowed just nine total QB pressures on 334 snaps in pass protection. He also led the nation's tackles with his 85.3 run-blocking grade.
Lowery helped pave the way for another prolific season for the Ohio offense. The Bobcats rank first in the MAC and 10th in the country with 41.2 points per game -- the highest scoring average in program history. Ohio's 494 points scored this season rank as the second-most in the history of program. The Bobcats have averaged 470.6 yards per game, which leads the MAC and ranks 16th in the country and is good for the highest average in program history. Ohio has racked up 5,647 yards of offense this year, which ranks as the third-most in the history of the program. Ohio's rushing offense ranks first in the MAC and eighth in the country with an average of 261.9 yards per game, which is good for the sixth-highest average in program history. The Bobcats have piled up the sixth-most rushing yards in a single season in program history with 3,143, and the team's 6.1 rushing yards per carry is the highest average in the history of the program. Ohio's 38 rushing touchdowns this season are the third-most scored by the Bobcats in program history. Ohio ranked third in the conference in sacks against with just 19 and led the conference in first downs (297; 24.8 per game), third-down conversions (48.3 percent conversion rate) and tied for the conference lead in time of possession (33:27).
In addition to Lowery, redshirt senior left guard Joe Anderson (Torrance, Calif.), redshirt senior running back A.J. Ouellette (Covington, Ohio), redshirt junior quarterback Nathan Rourke (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) and redshirt senior wide receiver Papi White (Seminole, Oklal.) were selected to the Pro Football Focus All-MAC First Team Offense.
Ohio (8-4, 6-2 MAC) has won at least eight games in a season for the ninth time under 14th-year head coach Frank Solich and earned bowl eligibility for the 10th year in a row. The Bobcats accepted an invitation to play in the DXL Frisco Bowl against Mountain West Conference foe San Diego State (7-5, 4-4 MWC). The game will be played on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET, and the contest will be nationally televised on ESPN.
