Ohio Football Spring Practice Position Spotlight - Cornerbacks

Gone: Bradd Ellis, London Miller

Returning: Cameron Gunnels, Jalen Fox, Jaylen Morgan, Ilyaas Motley, Xavior Motley, Marlin Brooks, Tariq Drake, Alvin Floyd, Jamal Hudson

Arriving: John Gregory (2018 Signee/Early Enrollee), Justin Birchette (2018 Signee)

Analysis:

Ohio's cornerback group lost a big piece with the graduation of Bradd Ellis who set an Ohio record with 19 pass breakups last season, while also picking off two passes which he returned for two touchdowns.

The other anchor of the Bobcats cornerback duo, RS senior Jalen Fox, returns after starting all 13 games last season. Fox had 42 total tackles and two interceptions with 11 passes broken up.

Along with Fox, RS senior Cameron Gunnels will add some needed leadership to the cornerback room for the Bobcats.

As the season went on, Ohio saw two young players emerge in true freshman Marlin Brooks and Jamal Hudson who both saw their minutes climb during the season and have looked good so far in spring workouts.

Hudson saw action in nine games last season while Brooks played in seven. The duo combined for 25 tackles and five pass breakups. As sophomores, Hudson and Brooks will continue to develop and log quality minutes in 2018.

Along with Hudson and Brooks there is a large crop of young talent waiting in the wings for Ohio – RS sophomores Xavior Motley, Ilyaas Motley and Jalen Morgan and RS freshman Tariq drake. Ohio is bringing in two freshmen John Gregory, who is already on campus as an early enrollee, and Justin Birchette.

Quote from – De'Angelo Smith – Assistant Coach/Cornerbacks

"The most important thing is the confidence they have in themselves and then overall them believing in each other and in what I am coaching. Then that they are taking the reps and applying it to the field. The other thing is they all have confidence when one guy has it and then the next guy has it and you start seeing it in the room. Next thing is making sure they are doing the right things on the field and putting it together."
