AVON, Ohio – In the longest game in Mid-American Conference Tournament history, the Ohio Baseball team (20-33) eliminated Miami (37-15) in 17 innings, 6-5, on Friday afternoon at Sprenger Stadium.
Ohio busted the game open in the 17th inning. With the bases loaded, freshman INF Zyon Avery (Indianpolis, Ind.) gave Ohio the lead with a sacrifice fly to right field. Sophomore OF Sebastian Fabik (Lebanon, Ohio) punched a single up the middle that scored two and put Ohio up 6-3. Miami was able to score two in the bottom of the 17th but was unable to bring the tying run in.
Senior INF Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.) broke the Ohio program record for all-time hits with his first single of the day. Rott ended the day 4-for-8 and reached base five times.
Junior INF Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) had a career-high five hits and was 5-for-7 with one RBI and a double. Hafner also reached once on a walk and scored two runs.
Redshirt freshman Jack Liberatore (Greensburg, Pa.) got the win for Ohio in 4.0 innings of relief after pitching the 12th-16th innings. Liberatore did not allow an earned run and fanned two batters.
Coming off his longest outing of his career last weekend, Sophomore LHP Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.) tossed a career-high 6.0 innings and struck out a career-high nine batters. Manis allowed just one earned run and just three hits.
Freshman LHP Joe Rock (Aliquippa, Pa.) was Ohio's starter and tossed 6.0 innings and allowed two earned runs and had two strikeouts.
Redshirt senior RHP Nick Kamrada (Grand Ledge, Mich.) got his first save of the season after getting the last two outs of the game in the 17th inning.
Miami took the lead the bottom of the second inning. Mackay Williams had a sacrifice bunt and an error brought home Reid Norberg to go up 2-0.
Ohio tied the game in the top of the fifth. A bases loaded error from Miami brought home Lukkes and then sophomore INF Aaron Levy (Cincinnati, Ohio) walked a run in to tie the game.
The scoring stopped until the 12th inning when each team plated a run. Sophomore OF Sebastian Fabik (Lebanon, Ohio) scored on an error to score. Miami answered with a sacrifice fly from Stephens.
The Avery sacrifice fly and Fabik single gave Ohio a 6-3 lead. Miami loaded the bases but left a runner on first after scoring two.
Ohio will continue the MAC Tournament at 5:10 p.m. against NIU.
