CLEVELAND -- Ohio baseball junior first baseman Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.) has been named the 2018 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year while designated hitter Tanner Piechnick (Canonsburg. Pa.) has earned All-MAC Second Team recognition, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday (May 22). Rott also earned All-MAC First Team and All-MAC Defensive Team selection.

Rott joins Marc Krauss (2009) and Mitch Longo (2015) as the only Bobcats to receive the MAC Player of the Year award. He gives the Bobcats seven All-MAC First Team selections over the last four seasons.

Rott led the Bobcats in batting average (.355), slugging percentage (.654), on-base percentage (.440), hits (76), doubles (15), home runs (15), walks (30), RBIs (50) and runs scored (48) in 2018, setting or tying career highs in every category. He also tied for the team lead with two triples. Rott tied for the MAC lead in hits and home runs and ranked second in slugging percentage and RBIs, third in batting average and fifth in runs scored. His 140 total bases were good for a conference-high, rank 17th in the nation and tied him for the 10th-most in a single season in Ohio history. He led Ohio with 24 multi-hit games – including a team-high eight with at least three hits – and also led the Bobcats with 15 multi-RBI games.

In conference play, Rott sported a team-best .333 batting average, a team-best .620 slugging percentage and a team-best .498 on-base percentage. He tallied a team-high 36 hits -- including a team-high eight doubles and seven home runs -- to go along with a team-high 27 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Rott earned MAC Player of the Week honors for the third time in his career on May 14 as well as being named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week after leading the Bobcats in batting average (.444), slugging percentage (1.111), hits (8), home runs (4), RBIs (9), runs scored (8) and home runs (4) the previous week. The honors capped off a stretch in which Rott homered seven times over seven games – including going deep in four-straight games.

Rott was also named to the All-MAC Defensive Team for the second year in a row after posting a .996 fielding percentage and leading Ohio with 467 putouts. He committed just two errors on the season. He ranked fourth on the squad with 25 assists and was a part of 47 double plays. He gives the Bobcats eight All-MAC Defensive Team picks over the last four seasons.

Piechnick earns all-conference honors for the first time in his career and gives the Bobcats four All-MAC Second Team selections over the last four seasons.

Piechnick ranked second on the team in slugging percentage (.484), doubles (12), home runs (8) and runs scored (48) behind Rott while ranking third in hits (51) and RBIs (28), setting career highs in every category. Piechnick ranked second on the squad with 15 multi-hit games.

In conference play, Piechnick ranked second on the squad in batting average (.305), slugging percentage (.533), on-base percentage (.373), hits (36), doubles (7), home runs (5), RBIs (20) and runs scored (22).
