TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team (15-14, 4-5 MAC) fell to host Toledo (9-18, 5-4 MAC), 8-1, on Sunday (April 8) in the rubber match of a three-game Mid-American Conference series at Scott Park.
The Bobcats bashed their way to a 15-4 triumph in the Friday (April 6) series opener, but the Rockets put together a late rally on Saturday (April 7) to even the set with a 3-2 win.
Toledo plated eight earned runs on 13 hits en route to the victory on Sunday while Ohio stranded 10 runners on base. The Bobcats left a runner on in eight of nine innings -- including two in the first and fifth frames. Ohio scoring threats snuffed out by inning-ending double plays in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Seven of Toledo's nine batters finished with a hit -- including five with multiple hits. Junior center fielder Ross Adolph finished 3-for-4 with a grand slam. He scored two runs and also walked once. Freshman third baseman Trace Hatfield collected two singles and drove in two runs. Freshman right fielder John Servello went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Senior first baseman Dalton Bollinger tallied a pair of singles and drove in a run. Sophomore catcher Michael Ryan posted two singles and scored a run.
Toledo plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Servello hit a one-out single to center, advanced to third on a base hit to right by Adolph and scored on an RBI ground out to second by Hatfield.
Senior left fielder Brad Boss made it a 2-0 lead for the Rockets in the third with a one-out solo shot to right.
Ohio cut into Toledo's lead in the top of the fourth. Freshman second baseman Aaron Levy (Cincinnati, Ohio) reached on a pop up infield single to lead things off, and sophomore shortstop Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) followed with a base hit to right. Redshirt sophomore right fielder Ryan Sargent (Algonquin, Ill.) loaded the bases with Bobcats when he reached safely on a throwing error by Toledo. Redshirt freshman catcher Dan McCauley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) then made it a one-run game when he lifted a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Levy to tag up from third and score.
Toledo tacked on to its lead in the fifth, though, with some two-out lightning. Servello sent a two-out single to center. Ohio senior left-handed starting pitcher Butch Baird (Big Prairie, Ohio) was then forced to exit the contest with an injury and was replaced on the mound by junior righty Kenny Ogg (Indianapolis, Ind.). Adolph kept the inning going with a single to right and advanced to second on the play to put two runners in scoring position. Hatfield then beat out a single to third, allowing Servello to score. The Rockets' lead grew to 4-1 when Bollinger sent a single through the left side to plate Adolph.
The Rockets continued to add on in the sixth. Ryan led off with a single up the middle, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior second baseman Casey Gose and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Boss drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position for Toledo. After Servello walked to load up the bases, Adolph smacked a grand slam to right.
Freshman right-hander Kyle Bischoff and sophomore righty Layne Schnitz-Paxton combined to toss the final three scoreless frames out of the bullpen for the Rockets. Bischoff struck out one and walked one over two innings while Schnitz-Paxton struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth. Neither allowed a hit. Freshman southpaw starting pitcher Jacob Youngpeter earned the win on the mound for Toledo, improving to 1-1 on the season. He tossed three scoreless frames while permitting two hits and two walks. Senior left-handed reliever Alex Wagner gave up one earned run on six hits over three innings. He fanned two.
Hafner was the lone Bobcat to tally multiple hits.

Redshirt junior righty Nick Kamrada (Grand Ledge, Mich.), freshman left-hander Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.), senior rght-hander Logan Jacik (Omaha, Neb.) and redshirt senior designated hitter/right-handed pitcher Michael Klein (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) combined to toss two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
