About Us:

The NCAA Eligibility and Student-Athlete Success staff provides Ohio University student-athletes with a comprehensive support program which utilizes various resources and learning techniques to promote student development and to help maximize each individual student-athlete's academic potential. These academic services provide a positive and constructive learning experience for student-athletes which are conducive to personal and professional growth. As the official liaisons between the Ohio University Athletic Department and all academic units on campus, the staff strives to assist student-athletes academically as well as monitor student-athletes' progress toward NCAA continuing eligibility.

Ohio University Life Skills Mission
The mission of the Life Skills Program at Ohio University is to promote leadership and to establish a commitment of service to others as a foundation for a balanced lifestyle. 

Academic Services:

NCAA Eligibility and Student-Athlete Success staff provide a range of services to OHIO student-athletes:

  • Provides assistance with class registration procedures and course selection
  • Advises student-athletes about University, MAC and NCAA rules and regulations
  • Conducts weekly meetings to track progress in courses throughout the semester
  • Monitors academic progress through midterm progress reports
  • Generates weekly reports for coaches on student-athletes' academic performance

  • Communicates regularly with faculty, sport medicine, and coaching staffs
  • Arranges free tutorial services for individual and group sessions
  • Tracks continuing student-athlete eligibility
  • Provides free printing and computer labs located in Peden Stadium
  • Offers a freshman student-athlete seminar class (UC 2900) as an orientation to campus life and academic requirements
  • Provides student-athletes team travels letters for instructors during season
  • Coordinates community service and academic scholarship opportunities
  • Meets with prospective student-athletes and their families on recruiting visits

Academic Resources
Tutoring Services, housed in the Academic Advancement Center (AAC) on campus, provides academic support to all Ohio University students. They offer appointments and drop-in sessions where students can meet with a tutor who works with students to master content. This peer can also guide students to study smarter, take better notes, and remain confident during exams.

Joan and Wallace Phillips Academic Center:

The Joan and Wallace Phillips Center, located on the fourth floor of Peden Stadium, houses the offices of NCAA Eligibility and Student-Athlete Success and Compliance. With more than 10,000 square feet of space, the Phillips Center offers two computer labs, a 42-seat classroom, private tutoring rooms, and administrative offices. The Joan and Wallace Phillips Center has five full-time staff members and three learning specialists.

Sunday 5:00pm-9:00pm

Study Hall

  • All first-semester freshmen, transfer student-athletes, and student athletes with a cumulative GPA below a 2.6 are required to participate in Study Hall.
  • Study Hall hour requirements: Cumulative GPA below 2.24 = 7 hours; Cumulative GPA between 2.25-2.59 = 5 hours
  • Student-athletes must complete a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 3 hours of Study Hall per sitting

During hours of operation, the entire 4th floor facility is open to student-athletes. Student-Athlete Success staff members are available on the 4th floor during busy, high-traffic hours and throughout the day. Learning Specialist Interns also monitor the 4th floor facility Sunday through Thursday evenings during evening Study Hall hours





Academic Resources:

  • Ohio University student-athletes earned a 3.147 term GPA and a 3.161 accumulative GPA for fall 2015. In spring 2016, the student-athlete’s term and accumulative GPAs improved from the previous term earning a 3.168 term GPA and a 3.208 accumulative GPA./li>
  • A total of 324 student-athletes received the Athletic Director's Honor Roll recognition (Term GPA above a 3.0) in the fall 2015 and 314 earned honors in spring 2016.
  • A total of 53 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 term GPA in 2015-2016 and are recognized as part of the 400 Club.
  • A total of 143 student-athletes were awarded Dean's List recognitions in the fall and 106 were selected to be Dean List’s recipients for spring semester.
  • OHIO had 14 of 16 sport programs finish with a team GPA above a 3.0 for the 2015-2016 year.


The Life Skills Program:

Ohio University is proud to participate in the Life Skills Program launched by the NCAA Foundation and Division I-A Athletic Director's Association in 1994. OHIO Athletics is committed to a program that develops the leadership potential of all student-athletes as they prepare for rewarding careers after athletics. The mission of the Life Skills Program at Ohio University is to promote leadership and to establish a commitment of service to others as a foundation for a balanced lifestyle.

Career Development
To influence the student-athlete to develop and pursue career life goals by:

  • Integrating the student-athlete into the career services programs offered by the Career and Leadership Development Center on campus.
  • Sharing internship and summer job opportunities in a student-athlete's chosen career field.
  • Assisting student-athletes in preparing for the job search and job interviews through various programs and workshops offered by SAAC.

Community Service
To encourage student-athletes to give service to others as a foundation for a rewarding lifestyle by:

  • Maintaining a comprehensive service program and encouraging all student-athletes to commit to service.
  • Service initiatives take place in the Athens and surrounding communities to serve several groups in Southeast Ohio.
  • Service projects are completed per team or by SAAC members and vary from year-to-year.

Personal Development
To foster the personal development of the student-athlete by:

  • Establishing an environment that promotes a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle through various workshops.
  • Providing leadership opportunities with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
  • Encouraging self-exploration through on-campus resources.

Studnet- Athlete Advisory Committee (SACC):

SAAC is a registered student organization that provides student-athletes with the education and experiences needed to assist them in bridging the gap from college to the professional world, and to encourage meaningful contributions to their communities. Membership consists of four executive board members, team representatives selected by the NCAA Eligibility & Student-Athlete Success staff in conjunction with head coaches, and additional student-athletes seeking involvement in programming provided by SAAC. SAAC plans activities consistent with the three commitments of the Life Skills program: personal development, community service, and career development. Each segment is viewed as critical in the personal growth process of student-athletes.


  • To design and implement activities that enhances the involvement of sporting events at Ohio University and to promote awareness of OHIO Athletics within the campus and Athens area
  • To actively encourage involvement of student-athletes in campus and community outreach programs and activities
  • To provide student-athletes with the opportunity to effectively communicate with the athletics department administration on matters that involves the welfare of the student-athlete
  • To effectively make decisions or act on any other matter relevant to the goals and responsibilities of the OHIO SAAC
  • To serve as advocates for all student-athletes in communicating information about relevant issues and proposed NCAA rule changes
  • To serve as advocates for all student-athletes in communicating information about relevant issues at the University and Mid-American Conference levels
  • To plan and execute the CATSPYS awards show at the end of the year

The CATSPYS take place during the spring semester and all student-athletes, coaches, and department administrators are invited to celebrate OHIO Athletics. The program features award presentations, videos, and skits. Refreshments and hors d'oeuvres are served preceding the program. This awards program aims at honoring student-athletes' success; both academically and athletically, and reflects on the highlights that took place throughout the year.
