ATHENS, Ohio --  The Ohio Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is hosting a food drive this Saturday (Dec. 8) at the men's and women's basketball games at the Convocation Center.

The event is being led by the SAAC Executive Committee -- Emily Deering (President), Kat Redden (Vice President) Adam Notestine (Secretary), Alexandra Pennington (Treasurer), Kendall Jessing (Social Media Chair) and Melissa Koziol (Volunteer Coordinator) -- with the help of the SAAC general membership. The student-athletes will donate the food to the Athens County Food Pantry. SAAC is also collecting donations at locations found in the Perry and Sandy Sook Academic Center, Carin Center Weightroom and the Convocation Center.

Fans are encouraged to bring their non-perishable food items to the women's basketball team's game against Coppin State at 1 p.m. ET and the men's basketball team's game against Radford at 3:30 p.m. ET. Student-athletes will be located at the main entrance and student entrances to collect the items.

"The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is devoted to providing the surrounding community with much needed support," said Pennington, who has been leading the initiative. "This year, we decided to give back and stress the importance of food security throughout Athens County. Food Pantries scattered throughout Athens County and Southeastern Ohio provide more support to the community than we may realize. With minimal funding and an immense amount of volunteers, they work diligently to maintain this impact year-round, which is why it is so important to show support within the community. The holiday food drive we put our efforts into is just one way we aimed to give back to a community that shows us so much love! Please consider supporting us in our final push to provide the Athens County Food Pantry with the biggest donation we can!"

SAAC has already received donations from several local businesses as well as a few families who have anonymously donated over $100 worth of food. SAAC itself purchased $100 worth of groceries for the drive.
